How to Choose a Prayer Mat (Sajjada): Size, Material & Travel Tips

Albir premium woven chenille prayer mat with geometric patterns

A prayer mat (sajjada, or msala in Swahili) is one of the most personal things a Muslim owns. The right one is comfortable to pray on, easy to carry and something you are happy to see every day. Here is how to choose.

1. Size

Most full-size prayer mats measure roughly 70–80 cm wide and 110–120 cm long, enough for sujood with room to spare. Travel mats can be slightly smaller. Check that your forehead and knees stay on the mat during prostration.

2. Material

  • Chenille: soft, woven pile with a luxurious feel; thin enough to fold neatly.
  • Cotton: light, breathable and easy to wash.
  • Wool: warm and durable, usually heavier.
  • Memory-foam: extra cushioning for knees, but bulkier to carry.

3. Thickness and portability

If you travel, commute or pray at work, choose a thin, foldable mat that slips into a bag. If you pray mostly at home, a thicker mat adds comfort.

4. Design

Look for patterns that feel calm and uncluttered. Geometric motifs, mihrab arches and subtle colours help you focus without distraction.

5. Care

Shake out dust regularly, spot-clean spills and follow the care label for washing. Air-dry flat and store folded away from direct sun to keep colours rich.
