What to Wear in Zanzibar: A Modest, Breathable Packing Guide
Zanzibar is a warm, welcoming island, and a predominantly Muslim one. Dressing a little modestly in towns and villages is a simple way to show respect, and it keeps you cooler under the sun too. Here is what locals and seasoned visitors pack.
In Stone Town and villages: cover shoulders and knees
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where daily life, mosques, markets and homes sit side by side. Loose cotton t-shirts, light long-sleeve tops, long skirts, linen trousers and maxi dresses work well. Choose breathable fabrics, 100% cotton is a reliable choice in the humidity.
On the beach: relaxed, but be aware
Beachwear is normal at resorts and on beaches such as Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Matemwe. Keep swimwear for the beach and carry a light cover-up or wrap for the walk back through villages. A roomy bag is perfect for towels and sunscreen.
Visiting a mosque
If you are invited to visit a mosque, cover your arms and legs, women should bring a scarf for the head, and remove your shoes at the entrance. Dress neutrally and speak softly.
During Ramadan
Many people fast from dawn to sunset. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in public during the day, and dress especially modestly out of respect.
Don't forget
- A light hoodie for air-conditioned rooms, boat trips and breezy evenings.
- A cap or hat, the equatorial sun is strong.
- Comfortable sandals that are easy to take off at mosques and homes.
